In 2015, Nexus HQ (previously Haven MNC) organised the inaugural Zombie Walk. The Zombie Walk is an organised public walk of people dressed as zombies to promote mental health.

The first Zombie Walk in Coffs Harbour was held in Mental Health Month and had over 300 attendees including many families dressed in incredible, grotesque, and hilarious Zombie costumes and makeup.

The Zombie Walk emphasises the link between physical activity, social connections and mental health.

“Around 300 attended the first year Zombie Walk to raise awareness for Mental Health Month and to have people reflect on the support available to themselves, their family, and friends,”Mid Coast Communities’Sue Currie said.

“We had Santa zombies, and Where’s Wally zombies, cheerleader zombies, zombies with walking frames – seeing the looks on peoples’ faces as this flashmob horde shambled past the general public was amazing! We even ended up taking group photos with a wedding party that was happening at the Jetty!”

The theme for Mental Health Month this year is ‘Learn & Grow’ and promotes why it is important for us all to know about mental health – our thoughts and feelings and how to take action to improve our mental wellbeing.

Mid Coast Communities and headspace Coffs Harbour are supporting Nexus HQ to put on the 2016 Zombie Walk.

“The Walk will be a blast – so come along and join the fun,” Ms Currie said.

“There will be Special Effect Artists available and following the Walk, which is approximately half the length of last year’s walk, Synapse will be playing live on October, Saturday 15 from 12:30pm to 2:00pm and Key Employment are putting on a free BBQ.

“Registration for the event is $5 per person, which can be paid on the day.”

Background Information on Nexus HQ:Mid Coast Communities creates opportunities for young people to develop their leadership skills and to create inclusive and welcoming spaces for young people to share common interests.

When a group of motivated young people (aged 18 to 25) from Coffs Harbour approached us with their idea to work together to plan and host activities for young people who identify as nerds, geeks and enthusiasts in regional NSW, we were more than happy to support them.

The young people formed a leadership group called Haven MNC in 2015. The group (now known as Nexus HQ) has been youth-led and youth-driven from the outset. Nexus HQ has already delivered some excellent events and activities and are planning more for the future.

Nexus HQ and participants at their events identify as ‘nerds, geeks and enthusiasts’. They enjoy activities like Conventions, LARPing, Board Games, Gaming, Quidditch and Cosplay. Nexus HQ has an active Facebook page and website. They collect feedback at activities to identify activities young people would like. In response, Nexus HQ has delivered the following events:
