Of droughts and flooding rains

IN an article in Sunraysia Daily (September 28), we were reminded what had been reported in the paper exactly 100 years before.

“The greatest flood since 1870 has been experienced in the Goulburn Valley.”

Of course the 1911–16 Australian drought consisted of a series of droughts that affected various regions of Australia.

Before that, other droughts included 1813-15 severe drought in NSW that prompted searches for new pastures, and the 1826-29 drought in NSW that caused Lake George to dry up and the Darling River to cease flowing.

We all know about the flooding of the eastern states that caused the flooding of the Murray and Darling rivers in 1956 before the big dry that brought us into the 21st century.

Now it is 2016 and we have just experienced the big floods in SA, Victoria and NSW and the Murray is at capacity.

The world is changing, possibly heating up for one reason or another that I leave the experts to argue about.

The Barrier Reef and other environments are changing, and weather events also have adjusted with whatever is changing things.

The cycles of droughts and flooding rains have always been there, only one or two of each extreme happening each lifetime, but they have always occurred.
