The 7-year-oldwas swimming in the wave pool at Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope Gardens, early this afternoon.

He was seen unconscious below the surface and rescued by a lifeguard and a teenage boy.

The lifeguard administered CPR and the child woke up before paramedics arrived. He was reportedly able to walk to the ambulance, but will be staying in hospital overnight for observation.

Blacktown mayor Stephen Bali said this is the second such incident this month.

“Today’s rescue was in the nick of time and it would be tragic if a school holiday outing ended intragedy because someone wasn’t watching over their children in the pool,” Cr Balisaid.

“Parents and carers have a responsibility to look after their children – lifeguards do a great jobkeeping our pools safe, but they are not babysitters.

“This is a reminder that, as summer fast approaches, parents and carers must remain vigilant at alltimes when their children are in the water.”

A council spokesperson saidBlacktown Council’s leisure andaquatic centres endorse the Royal Life Saving Society KeepWatch campaign.

Centres that participate in the program will have strict policies for parental supervision, which aresupported by the Royal Life Saving guidelines for safe pool operations.

The guidelines say that parents or guardians should actively supervise their children at all times andbe dressed ready forsudden pool entry.
