“Recent flood events are slowly receding but as one event passes, another emerges,” “concerned”, Goondiwindi Regional Mayor, Cr Graeme Scheu said this afternoon (Wednesday).

Extensive damage was received at the Yarrilwanna Crossing on the Minnel Road north of Toobeah during the last event according to Deputy-Mayor, Cr RickKearney.

But the damage extends far wider than that.

“The engineering team isworking through the flooded region and a full audit report is being compiled in readiness for a possible NDRRA claim but with damage to Council and Main Roads assets from Inglewood to Talwood, it takes a bit of time,” he said.

The damage bill couldexceed $2mwith levee banks and road repairs.

“The flood waters south of Toobeah are only just receding now and we have another 6mflood on the door step. That’s four floods in three weeks in excess of 6m,” Cr Kearney said.

“That’s unheard of.Council fully understands the urgency of repairing these roads as the district prepares for another major harvest.

“Roads are the lifeblood of these rural areas and it is planned that emergenteffortswill commence as soon as the Minnel Road dries out enough to commence stabiliser work,”Cr Kearney said.

Crews have been rostered to beginrepairs to the Minnel Road onMonday, October 17.

“Weather permittingand hopefully theworks will be completed in that week. It is planned that the Minnel Road will be open again by the end of that week. Council will get to other repair works as soon as possible,” he said.

“Unheard of”.Four floods in less than three weeks.
