After some initial concerns, the Grampians Cricket Association junior competition looks set for a big season with the inclusion of late teams.

The competition looks likely of having eight or nine teams in the under 16 competition with Willaura the most recent team to express interest.

The position of junior co-ordinator is yet to be filled so the associations leading men and women are doing their best to get the season started by October 22, but the seniors remain a priority.

The under 13 competition boasts similar numbers to the under 16 competition however Stawell based club Youth club have had to withdraw their team.

Grampians Cricket Association president David Turner said the growing numbers of junior cricket were a great result for cricket in the region.“We are very happy with our junior competition at present,” hesaid.

“We had a few teams pull out early, but some late entries have allowed kids to settle in new teams.”

With the competition of other sports an issue, as well as the senior grades wanting to play 50 over cricket, the junior competition will run on Friday nights with the occasional Saturday morning game.

“It is a bit of a compromise so the juniors don’t have to start too early and the seniors get closer to what they want,” Turner said.“The seniors play 45 overs so we are kind of meeting in the middle.”

The junior competition is yet to have adraw finalised.

The rain around the district will come in to play with the grounds that are available early in the season.

“We have had 22 inches of rain since May and that obviously plays havoc with pitches,” Turner said.

“It is all a working progress though, but we are desperate for a junior co-ordinator.”

Turner had been in talks with some candidates, but an appointment was yet to be made. The association is in the process of getting a list of coaches together to discuss the fixture.
