Hagons pay tribute to Holden: Our Car

SINCE the first Great Race was held at Mount Panorama in 1963, no manufacturer has enjoyed more success at Mount Panorama than Holden.

Each year a wave of supporters decked out in red and black make their annual trek to the Mount in a Holden and proudly wave their red lion flags.

Thousands of Australians have a deep passion for Holdens – something which father and son Will and Toby Hagon recognise.

Between them the Hagons have 70 years of experience in the automotive industry and now they have decided to tell the story of Holden in Australia.

Their co-authored book Holden: Our Car 1856-2017 explores and explains the dramatic rise and fall of Holden’s empire. It is full of never before seen photos, art work, advertising and futuristic designs from the manufacturer’s archive.

“Australia’s revered ‘own’ car brand – Holden – will not quite make 70 when it stops being Australian and production ceases in Adelaide[vehicle assembly]and Melbourne [engine production]in later 2017,” the Hagons write.

“That will be the end of the Australian motor industry as we’ve known it for nearly 120 years, of dreamers, designers, engineers and passionate car people making vehicles for track as well as road, that suited this big, tough land.”

Holden: Our Car naturally touches on the Great Race – both in the 500 and 1000 format – as well as the Bathurst 6 Hour, 12 Hour and 24 races.

Not surprisingly, the Hagons have also devoted a chapter to Peter Brock, the nine-times Great Race winner who was dubbed ‘The King of the Mountain.’

This year’s Bathurst 1000 will see competitors take time to mark the 10thanniversary of Brock’s death. The winners of Sunday’s 161-lap epic will also be awarded the Peter Brock Trophy.

Whether or not a Holden wins – taking the tally to 31 successes in the endurance epic – remains to be seen.

But Holdens will still hold a special place in the heart of many Australians, as the Hagons put it: “Holden is our car – a symbol of our pioneering spirit and a vehicle for our dreams.”
