Democracy needs compromise

WE need informed and nuanced politicians, not populist demagoguery.

As a ratepayer, I find it disturbing to see a local candidate inferring that the previous council is somehow incompetent or dishonest.

It’s one thing to insult your potential future colleagues at the pub with your mates, but it’s simply not OK to do so in the local paper.

Anthony Cirillo claims local politicians have had “time to execute all these wonderful ideas and plans we are seeing proposed” but have failed to live up to their words.

Mr Cirillo seems to think the council is a dictatorship where anyone who is elected can simply impose their will on ratepayers, implementing everything that they desire with the brush of a magic wand, but this is not the case.

Politicians should strive to achieve what they propose during election campaigns, but they must also respect the other elected representatives who were elected to prosecute their own stated causes.

They cannot impose their will simply because they were elected, they must negotiate and compromise.

Democratic politics are complicated by the very nature of democracies – it is only in dictatorships that we find the means to “execute all these wonderful ideas” without restraint, to dictate what will and will not happen in a society.

Mr Cirillo needs to understand that democratic political processes are essentially driven by numbers and negotiation.

If he has already taken to attacking his competition and insinuating that they are inept or incompetent before he himself has even entered the ring, what chance has he of negotiating and securing the numbers needed to “be involved in leading the change”?

This kind of accusatory public statement is sufficient evidence that Mr Cirillo is not ready to hold public office as he has demonstrated a propensity to hyperbole and is publicly disrespectful of his potential colleagues and his democratic rivals.

He may well end up in a council chamber with the very people he is insulting.
