BOOK PROJECT: Simmone Croft and Toni Tapp Coutts have teamed up to produce a book of stories about women from the Katherine region.

The pair said they had discovered the book “Quiet Achievers” which had been created by the Katherine Womens’ Crisis Centre in 2003, was now out of print.

They then decided it was time to gather more stories of what the women of the Katherine region are doing in their communities so the book can be updated and republished.

Deputy MayorTapp Coutts said:‘We want to collect stories about those women working quietly away in the community, many volunteering to maintain family, sports, health, social and cultural groups.”

She said there are many stories about women in the Katherine region waiting to be told.

“We invite friends and colleagues to submit stories from all sectors of the Katherine region community, of women living or deceased, that deserve to be recognised for their contribution to family and community,” deputy Mayor Tapp Coutts said.

The new writing team is now calling on people to submit a story of up to 1200 words in a length by December 1 this year.

The authors would also appreciate a photograph of the subject if one is available.

“We welcome all stories and are happy to assist in fine tuning the stories if people are not confident about their writing skills,” museum manager Simmone Croft said .

“We just ask that you get the information together,” she said.

Some of the things people may like to include will be the birth and death dates, maiden name, married name, when they came to Katherine, names of children.

“This will help us create a history of women for future generations,” Ms Croft said.

The creation of the book has been supported by a Katherine Town Council community grant and will be launched on International Women’s Day. March8, next yearat the Katherine Museum.

All people whose stories have been entered will receive a free copy of the book and copies will be supplied to the Katherine Library, Territory Library, NT Archives and the National Library.
